By now, everybody knows former Southern Miss quarterback Anthony Alford transferred to Ole Miss in December.

According to NCAA rules, Alford must sit out a year before he’s eligible to play for the Rebels.

But Alford, who practiced exclusively at safety during spring practices, filed an appeal with the NCAA in hopes of gaining eligibility so he can play for Ole Miss in the fall.

I spoke with Alford about it recently.

“I turned in all my paperwork to the NCAA,” he said. “I think we’ll find something out in June.”

On the subject of the former Petal star’s position switch, Alford said he’s excited about the change.

“I’m just able to be a natural athlete,” he said. “I’ve always liked contact. But when I was in high school and (at Southern Miss), coaches always told me to avoid contact in order to take care of my body. But being able to fly around and throw licks, it’s fun.”

Alford is currently in Dunedin, Fla., with the Gulf Coast League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Last summer, he spent two weeks with the GCL’s Blue Jays, and hit .167 with one home run and four stolen bases.
